Did you know that audiobooks, or “talking books,” were specifically created for blind readers? It was Thomas Edison who first envisioned phonographic books, after his successful invention of the phonograph in 1877. The first words he recorded on a phonograph was “Mary Had A Little Lamb,” making it the first sound recorded piece of literature. With further advancements in sound technology making it possible to have longer recordings, the American Foundation for the Blind started the “Talking Books Program” in 1931, with free distribution of audio recordings of books to visually impaired people. However, it is Caedmon Records that is considered to be the pioneer of the audiobook industry, with a recording of Dylan Thomas reading a collection of his own poetry released to the public in 1952. On another note, audiobook torrents can also be downloaded for free.

It was not until the 1980s that the audiobook industry really boomed, with major producers of audiobooks growing from eleven to twenty-one. Audio enhancers also grew in popularity, for pretty obvious reasons. At present, audiobook sales are growing faster than both print books and e-books. According to the Association of American Publishers, in the first eight months of 2017, audiobook sales rose by 20%, print books by 1.5%, while e-books dropped by 5.4%. This growth can be accounted for by changing technologies and the need to multitask. As 95% of Americans now own smartphones, audiobooks have become the most accessible book format for people living in a fast-paced society.

    'So it seems like a comprehensive torrent site, but I think it lacks something compared to non torrent websites where you can download audio books for free. However, that being said, with amazon and Audio you get a ton of audio books at a very low price so maybe torrenting isn't actually the best option here. '

My favorite way to find free audio books at Internet Archive is by sorting the books by view count to find the most popular audio books.

Popular audio books here include The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes, Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, Jane Eyre, The Swiss Family Robinson, Moby Dick, The Art of War, and Dracula.

Some are available in multiple formats so that you can download an audio book in the MP3 or OGG format, for example.

Mind Webs is another part of Internet Archive that has several dozen classic sci-fi audio books.

Project Gutenberg has audiobooks that are human-read and also some that are computer-generated. These are public domain books that have been turned into audio books that are now available for free for anyone who's interested.

The easiest way to find an audio book here is to browse through the authors and titles. You can also view them by languages and by the time they were added — over the last 24 hours, the last 7 days, and the last 30 days.

ejunto is the place to be if you're wanting audio books on American history, philosophy, autobiographies, and similar topics.

Although there's a sparse selection and you can't listen to these public domain audio books on the ejunto website, you can download them to your computer for free.

Some of the free audio ebooks here include a George Washington biography, Benjamin Franklin's autobiography, an audio recording of the US Constitution, and Second Treatise on Government by John Locke.

Scribl is a very different audio book website because while there are some free audio books, most of them come at a cost. It's really a hit or miss type of situation when you look for free audio ebooks here.

However, we've included it here because you might find unique books that aren't free anywhere else. Just make sure to grab them quickly because as books get more popular, Scribl puts a price on them.

Because Scribl has other things, too, like ebooks and podcasts, you want to make sure to filter the results to only show audio books.

There used to be a free audio book website at Podiobooks.com but it's now a part of Scribl.

Free audio books at Spotify? Yes! With a catch: it's only free to download the books if you're a paying user. Spotify memberships allow for downloading content while free users can only stream the books.

The free audio books at Spotify are not organized very well because Spotify is a music streaming service, not an audio book website — but there is a good handful of them available.

Similar to Spotify, YouTube is not primarily a good source for audiobooks because most of the content is music and videos. However, you might have luck finding some really great free audio books on YouTube if you know how to search for them.

If you can't find an audio book on YouTube by searching for its name followed by 'audiobook' (e.g., the six pillars of self esteem audiobook), try Reddit. The /r/audiobooksonyoutube sub is built specifically for sharing which videos on YouTube are actually audiobooks.

Once you find an audiobook you like, and so long as you know it's public domain or is legal to download, you can download just the audio from the video with a YouTube to MP3 converter.
